When I am Laid in Earth. Mapping with a Pyrograph, the Melting Away of the Lewis Glacier on Mt. Kenya (2014)

In October 2014, Simon Norfolk spent eighteen days in a Kenyan mountain hut at a height of almost five thousand metres. His aim was to capture the melting away of the Lewis Glacier. Thanks to periodic measurements taken of the glacier since 1934, Norfolk was able to chart the ice mass’s past borders on the present-day mountain. At night, Norfolk dragged an improvised torch over the ice mass’s outlines from previous moments in history. In doing so, he reveals the merciless melting, on a mountain that was once a volcano, by means of a fire fuelled by the same materials that harm the climate. In this work Norfolk mourns the rapid disappearance of a beauty that has existed for millennia whilst simultaneously bridging the gap between the human sense of time and the glacier’s timescale.

PHOTOGRAPHS FROM THE WAR IN AFGHANISTAN (Afghanistan, 2010-2011)

In 2010 and 2011 Simon Norfolk travelled through Afghanistan, following the footsteps of the Irish war photographer John Burke (1843-1900), a pioneer who between 1878 and 1880 photographed in the country, then as now torn by war. The photographs that Norfolk made on his trip are a response to, and in some cases his own interpretation of Burke's war photographs, which are shown next to Norfolk's. Norfolk shows us two sorts of perverted cities. On the one hand there is a city like Kabul, with a flourishing security and military industry, almost no normal middle class or generally accepted economic production, and a lively informal market. On the other hand, he encountered huge military bases, with their busy airfields and extensive amenities. The result is a 'tale of two cities' – both sick and untenable.

FULL SPECTRUM DOMINANCE (United States 2008)

Several times a year nuclear missiles without their warheads are launched from California in the direction of the Marshall Islands, simply to see if they still work. During the Cold War this practice called up associations with threatened annihilation, but in the present climate it simply appears ludicrous. The British photographer Simon Norfolk recorded this test ritual in FULL SPECTRUM DOMINANCE. In doing so, Norfolk uses the outdated and essentially functionless death machines as a symbol for mankind's warring madness.
