A TALE OF TWO SLUMS (India / Indonesia, 2003)

As a part of a long-running project on poverty and globalisation, Stephen Dupont made life-sized portraits, shot on Polaroid stock, in the slums of Mumbai and Jakarta. The reason for choosing these mega-cities was simple: where India has the largest Hindu community in the world, Indonesia has the largest Muslim community. What do the economic, political and religious developments caused by globalisation mean for these people?

TALIBAN BURNING (Afghanistan, 2005)

In October, 2005, American soldiers in Kandahar set the bodies of two dead Taliban fighters on fire. Using the speaker on their Humvee they broadcast the message that the Taliban were ‘cowardly dogs’ because they let their comrades be burnt with their face to the west. It turned out the action was the brainchild of the little-known Psychological Operations unit, and was intended to 'smoke out' the Taliban. Stephen Dupont was stationed with the combat unit involved as an embedded journalist, and recorded the incident. As a result of the international outcry about the incident, PsyOps of this sort were replaced by a politics of cultural sensitivity.

RASKOLS (2004)

According to the financial paper The Economist, Port Moresby, capital of Papua New Guinea, is the world's least livable city. Two-thirds of the residents live in slums; seventy percent are unemployed. The city is a spawning ground for RASKOLS (2004), street gangs that rob and plunder. The proceeds go to their own community. Stephen Dupont photographed one of the oldest gangs, the Kips Kaboni or Red Devils. The members themselves decided how they would pose, often as tough guys. In this way Dupont emphasizes the dignity of the raskols. In his eyes, more than anything else the gang members are victims of the crisis in their country, and Robin Hood figures of a sort.

Tsunami Aftermath

In January, 2005, two weeks after the sea-floor quake and the resulting tsunami, Stephen Dupont traveled to Banda Aceh in Indonesia, the city that lay closest to the epicenter of the event. There he was a witness to the destructive force that nature can exert on man. The flood wave, which claimed hundreds of thousands of lives throughout Southeast Asia and left millions of people homeless, had as good as erased Banda Aceh from the earth. There remained only chaos and misery. Even the survivors who sought the remains of their homes looked like zombies, says Dupont. 'There was no more emotion in that place. Everything was dead or lost.'
