Spleen and Ideal

In Spleen and Ideal, beauty is pursued across the disintegrating boundaries between male and female. Transgressive sexual encounters with what at times seems to be one and the same person are captured on instant film and mixed with impressions of the urban architecture in which they are anchored. In this project, which centers on gender and identity confusions, photography is a matter of decisive distance between immersion and detachment.

All images were taken in Thailand between 2010 and 2011, and form the first part of a larger body of work in progress, born out of a persistent urge to photographically confront questions regarding gender and sexuality.

Ilfochrome prints, edition of 5, image size 24X24 cm.
Spleen and Ideal was published in 2012 by Mörel Books.

KOLKATA (India, 2008-2011)

The life of Tiane Doan Na Champassak's uncle reads like an adventure story: stationed in Algiers during the Second World War, later involved in secret missions in occupied China and Indochina. But his autobiography, so worth reading, begins in Calcutta, today called Kolkata. Those scenes inspired his nephew to explore the streets of that teeming city with its millions of inhabitants, with all their extremes: wealth and poverty, splendour and squalor, ancient and modern, beautiful and ugly. It is in these streets, according to the photographer, that you see the essence of India's reality.

CREDO (India, 2004-2007)

For three years the photographer Tiane Doan na Champassak researched Hinduism. He focused primarily on the importance that this religion attaches to the four elements, earth, air, water and fire. As the field for his work he chose Varanasi, the holiest city for the Hindus in India, and Allahabad, one of the four Indian cities to which Hindus undertake their obligatory quadrennial pilgrimages. The event, which prominently involves the four elements, is attended by millions of Hindus. That makes it the world's largest religious gathering.
