Phillip Toledano: inside out
Exhibition /

Highlights of Phillip Toledano at Noorderlicht this summer

This summer the Noorderlicht Photo Gallery is showing highlights from the still developing but strong oeuvre of the successful photographer and visual artist Phillip Toledano. From 6 July through 25 August his widely praised series of portraits A New Kind of Beauty, the moving Days with My Father and the première of Maybe can be seen, along with other work. Furthermore, Noorderlicht is showing a selection of his paintings, installations and sculptures for the first time in Europe.

Phillip Toledano believes that photographs should be like unfinished sentences. There must always be room for questions and for the viewer's own interpretation. Toledano’s work is socially engaged and varies in the medium chosen, ranging from photography to installations. Humour and exaggeration are often part of his visual vocabulary as an artist. They are undeniably present in the paintings and sculptures of Kim Jong Phil and the installation America: The Gift Shop, both of which are part of this exhibition.

The photographs in Phillip Toledano: inside out are more reflective in tone. With the highly personal Days with My Father and the series Maybe, being introduced in this exhibition, a clear tendency toward introspection can be detected in Toledano's work. In this series, the closing section of a triptych about mortality, Toledano investigates his future.
‘Sometimes, projects are intimately intertwined, even though I’m unaware of their connections at the time. Such is the case with Days with My Father, A New Kind of Beauty, and Maybe. Although they look visually dissimilar, they’re all intimately linked. They all deal with the human approach to mortality. For Maybe I took a DNA test that told me what illnesses I’m likely to get. I consulted with fortune-tellers. I researched insurance company statistics. And I looked at my parents’ lives. Working with a skilled prosthetics expert, I made images based on this information. I became multiple versions of my future self. Each image is a potential direction for my life. It’ll be interesting in 20 years, to look at this work, and see what came closest.’

Opening: Friday, 5 July, 5:00 p.m., conducted by Lars Boering, owner of Lux Photo Gallery. He will talk with Phillip Toledano about his work and the exhibition.

This exhibition is in cooperation with Lux Photo Gallery
