Submitting for the 2010 Photofestival

FAQ & Conditions

Noorderlicht calls on photographers and curators to submit their work or proposals for this year's photofestival. On this page you will find the answers to ten FAQs around the conditions for submissions.

1. When can I submit my work for the Noorderlicht Photofestival 2010?

Noorderlicht opens the term for submitting on Monday February 15.

2. Who is invited to send in work?

Noorderlicht welcomes work and proposals by professional photographers, photography curators and institutions from all over the world.

3. What kind of work may I submit?

For the annual festival Noorderlicht always works with a theme. Your work should connect to this year's theme or give a clear vision on it.

Before you submit your work please consider carefully whether your work is suitable for Noorderlicht. We advise you to look around in our archive in order to get a feel of the photographic context in which we work. To read more on the theme for 2010 please follow this link...

4. Does it matter if I send in single images or series?

Yes, it definately does. Noorderlicht highly appreciates receiving photo series. We barely work with single images.

We especially welcome recent projects, even projects that are still in progress. Older and historical series are not excluded, but in that case we prefer it if they have not been shown in the Netherlands before.

5. What complementary information do I need to add to my submission?

The work should be accompanied by:

  • C.V. with contact details (in English)
  • a short and clear description of the series/project (word/pdf) (in English)

NB. Sending in a specific series is far better than just giving us a web address where the series is to be found.

6. How many series can I submit?

We have no guideline for the amount of series or photos that can be submitted. It really is up to you. No submission is too large as long as it is edited to relevance. Consider which images should absolutely be seen by us to get a good idea of what you do and what your work is about. Just keep in mind that we have to process a lot of submissions and sometimes less is more. If we are interested we will ask for more or look it up ourselves on your website.

Besides concrete proposals, we are also interested in a general dialogue. We would for instance love to see the books you published, and feel this to be a valuable means of exchanging information with our colleagues. Especially catalogues of group shows are always very welcome. Our love for books is well known as evidenced by the special products of our own publishing house Aurora Borealis

7. What are the technical specifications?

  • We only accept material submitted through DVD, CD-ROM, email (15 Mb max), prints, or publications. When sending prints or publications, please include scans whenever possible.
  • Digital files should be provided at high quality and at a resolution of at least 1000x1500 pixels. Images through email preferably in JPEG format.
  • Always save files in RGB or grayscale mode, not as CMYK. If color management is used, please include the color profiles in the image files.
  • Your work should be sent as separate image files, no PDF or Word files. Powerpoint, Director, MPEG files (and such) or video DVD's, may only be used when concerning a multimedia presentation that cannot be presented otherwise. Even then send some separate images (stills) in addition.
  • When sending prints: please make sure that the printing quality is good and that the size is at least 20x25 cm (8x10 inch).
  • Submissions will not be returned. We make an exception for single copies such as dummies or special prints. If you want those returned to you, clearly indicate so and give us your return address.

8. When is the deadline?

Please send in your work before 12 April.

9. When can I expect a response on my submission?

Please do not expect a quick reply. We receive hundreds of submissions and they take some time to process. Please rest assured that everything we receive will be carefully looked at and that everyone will receive an answer.
