Tryntsje Nauta - The sea calls
At the remote Willem Barentsz Institute on Terschelling young people take a four year course to prepare themselves for life as a seaman. In student rooms full of impersonal elements, and in almost identical uniforms, they assume their future identity. Tryntsje Nauta asked what inspires young men (and a handful of girls) of scarcely twenty to choose a life at sea. She lived with them for weeks on end, and produced this portrait of this new generation of seamen and their view of the sea.
Pieter de Vries - Terra inCognita, from Helsdeur to Duivels Hoorn
“We never see the Wadden from above. It is known as a ‘flat’ region, that you walk or sail across.” Pieter de Vries seeks to show how beautiful and extraordinary the Wadden are, including the German and Danish Wad. The shapes and colours that are created by natural forces are different every day. Here creation is still evolving with every tide.

History of the Karmel Cloister at Drachten
From 1936 to 1993 the Karmelklooster in Drachten was the convent of the discalced Carmelites. The convent was built according to the medieval plan, with four cloisters around an inner court. At the back lay the large walled castle garden.
Now exhibitions and concerts are organized in the convent, and on weekdays it is used by all kinds of institutions, which rent space for one day or multi-day training courses. It is also a wedding location for the community of Smallingerland, and can be rented for receptions.
You are visiting a location where the memory of the Carmelite nuns is maintained. It is the only still entirely intact convent in the North Netherlands, and is lovingly preserved.
