About the photogallery
Podium for documentary photography
The Noorderlicht Photogallery is Noorderlicht's permanent exhibition space. The gallery offers a continuing programme of exhibitions for which documentary photography is the point of departure. With work from distinctive past masters in photography and space for new talent, the gallery presents exceptional and trend-setting shows the whole year through.
Exhibition space in the heart of the city of Groningen
Since the summer of 2005 the Noorderlicht Photogallery has been located at a unique spot in the centre of the city of Groningen, just a stone's throw from the Grote Markt, the Groninger Museum and the main building of the University of Groningen. It looks out over the monumental Der Aa-kerk, traditionally the central site for the Groningen edition of our Photofestival.
The exhibition space is at least 500 m2, divided over two storeys. Seven or eight exhibitions are organised there every year, always assembled by ourselves, in consultation with the photographers. Noorderlicht rarely works with off-the-shelf exhibitions curated by others. The gallery is not only a place for showing work, but is even more a laboratory school for future photofestivals.
