1995
Main exhibition 'Common Lives' In 1995 the festival took place from October 5 till November 4. That year, for the second time a central main exhibition was organised in the 'Der Aa-Kerk', a large location in the centre of Groningen. The main theme was 'Common Lives'. Its goal was to show positive images, of a society that is seldom pictured in that way. Throughout the entire exhibition a sense of compassion and respect was woven, a counterweight to the (just as important) traditional documentary photography that pictures people mainly in their role as victim. The audience as well as the press responded very positive to this thematic choice.
Participating photographers were: Machiel Botman (NL), Koos Breukel (NL), Harry Cock (NL), Henrik Duncker & Yrjö Tuunanen (SF), Adrienne van Eekelen (NL), Elliot Erwitt (USA), David Eustace (GB), Julian Germain (GB), Arno Gisinger (A), Jan Griffioen (NL), Eric Hamelink (NL), Jerome Liebling (USA), Peter Menzel e.a. (USA), Duane Michals (USA), Dario Mitidieri (I), Corinne Noordenbos (NL), Steve Pyke (GB), To Sang Fotostudio (NL/China), Vincent Stokes (GB), Michel Szulc-Krzyzanowski (NL) and Teake Zuidema (NL).
The full introductory text for 'Common Lives' is available, as well as a more comprehensive overview of all participating photographers. Coinciding with the exhibition, the photobook 'Common Lives'' was published, and can be ordered at publisher Aurora Borealis.
Fifty Years of Future In the same location the exhibition 'Fifty Years of Future' was also featured, in which over a hundred photographers with as many photographs presented images that revolved around the positive feeling of life throughout fifty years of post-war freedom. The photographers are all members of the photo collective GKf, that was founded in 1945, and each presented a photograph they made in the year they entered the GKf.
Again an introductory text with an overview of participants is available.A catalogue appeared in which all photographs are included.
Other exhibitions Asides from all this Noorderlicht included an extended range of circa 50 exhibitions in just as many locations. These can be divided into two categories: galleries and musea, locations that feature art on a daily basis, and the stage exhibitions, locations that did so specially for this occasion.
Activities The activity program consisted of workshops, lectures and discussions. These were organised in part together with Studium Generale Groningen and Art Academy Minerva.
