Undoubtedly the best known participant in the exhibition is Koos Breukel (The Netherlands, 1962), a dozen of whose intense black and white portraits are to be seen, coming from his book which appeared recently, "Photo Studio Koos Breukel." Breukel's subjects are invariable people with a story; they are scarred by life, sometimes visibly, sometimes invisibly, but in a way the viewer can still feel. Usually sitting against a sombre, dark studio wall, they appear self-assured, yet fragile. Small details - a glance, a scar - life the corner of the veil about their past. |
