Years ago Jan van Leeuwen (b. 1932) began photographing articles he ran across daily as a purchaser and salesman at import firms. Later the photography took on more serious forms, and he experimented with techniques from the early days of the discipline. Laborious procedures such as the cyanotype charge his work with a certain mysticism. His poignant self-portraits call up associations with nightmares, his still lifes and group portraits incline toward romanticism.
