Karl Blossfeldt (1865-1932) is known for his 1928 book Urformen der Kunst, a collection of photographs of details of flowers and plants with which he exposes the parallels between natural structures and architectural ornaments. His clear and detailed shots, cleansed of every superfluity, make him one of the pioneering representatives of the New Objectivity. Blossfeldt used his photographs primarily for drawing instruction at Berlin's School of Applied Arts, where he worked as an instructor. In order to reveal the correspondence between the two disciplines, this special survey exhibition, in addition to his lesson material and its various applications, also draws on the herbarium that served as the basic material for his photographs.
