On the basis of photographs, collages and five diaries, Biblom reconstructs the life of the Englishman Jacob Mandeville (1926-?), an idiosyncratic naturalist who also worked in Groningen for a period. According to Mandeville the stars are the embodiment of deceased persons and starfish are actually sinners refused admission to the heavens. He accused the directors of zoos and natural history museums of falsifying real nature and "selling illusions." After setting fire to the Groningen Natural History Museum in 1971, he disappeared without a trace. Biblom came into contact with Mandeville's daughter Helga in 1997, who entrusted the surviving diaries and photos to him. |
