As a result of increasing free time, many Southern European regions are undergoing a remarkable urban transformation. For instance, along the Spanish coast so many blocks of cheap apartments are being stamped out of the ground that it has by now become one of the most thickly populated areas in Europe. Belinchón's (Spain, b. 1971) interest in these ephemeral cities is less for these "architectural ghosts" themselves, than for the people who live in them. According to him, their lifestyle tells us much about the norms, values and identities of the modern Westerners.
