When Ton Aartsen's father decided to return to Indonesia, the land of his birth, after 56 years, and look up the area and house where he had been born, Aartsen travelled with his father twice. For his father it was an emotional reunion, for Aartsen a sort of homecoming to a place where he had never been. Prior to that he had known the country only from family stories and yellowed photographs. As an homage to his grandfather, a respected photographer in the old Dutch East Indies, Aartsen processed a number of photographs in classical techniques: black and white, sepia toned, and hand coloured. These images visualise his Indonesian 'roots'. Colour photographs show how Aartsen experienced Indonesia as an enthusiast for its culture.
