On a trip through Indonesia Anneke Savert (b. 1964) became fascinated with the remnants of the colonial era. She was particularly struck by the great contrasts she saw: the cold, dark forts and buildings from the four-hundred-year history of the Dutch East India Company contrasted strongly with the colourful, natural environment, the hospitality of the people and the ever-present, sweet and heavy odours of flowers and spices. In 'Dutch Walls' Savert shows these extreme contrasts by mans of diptychs, photo projections and the smell of spices. The project was made possible in part by a grant from the Province of Gelderland.
