Elske Riemersma (b. 1956) reveals the ambience of a small hairdresser's business in the Friesian village of Tijnje, run since the 1960s by the barber Riemersma. In those days the shop was the centre of village life: both world news and local concerns were discussed there. In the mid-1970s the shop disappeared and the barber took work in 'the factory'. But until the end of the 1990s Riemersma continued to cut the hair of his regular clients in a small building behind the church. Elske Riemersma gives us a portrait of the small business, the barber and his clients. |
