Toward the end of the 1930s Johannes Lange (1908-1983) began a photo shop on the Noorderhaven in Groningen. Before that he was a tailor, with photography as his hobby. As a shopkeeper he also continued to photograph in his spare time, From 1943 Jos Lange was one of the most active members of the amateur photographers club Daguerre, until illness made that impossible for him.
Lange initially sought his subjects in and around the city of Groningen. In the 1950s he discovered the circus as an inexhaustible source for photographs. Many of these photographs appear in the exhibition, along with travel photographs from North Africa and his shots of Staphorst and Groningen a half century ago.
