In the late 1980s Ton Broekhuis (b. 1951) was working on a photo book on an isolated region of northern Romania which he had visited several times in the preceding decade. It became a visual report on everyday life in an ordinary rural community in a far from normal country. When the Ceaucescu government fell in 1989, the publisher cancelled the already completed photo book because of the unstable situation in Romania. What are left are the memories of an astonished traveller. |
