Exchanges

Two exhibitions are supplied by institutions in Groningen's sister cities, to wit, an exhibition of the work of Weegee from the Side Gallery in Newcastle, England, and the exhibition 'Body is Required' from the Museet for Fotokunst in Odense, Denmark.

Exchanges: Weegee

In the 1930s and '40s Arthur Fellig, a.k.a. Weegee (1899-1968), criss-crossed the nightly darkness of the city where he lived, New York, in his auto. He photographed on the street and in bars, in police stations and in cinemas. Thanks to his police radio he was often the first - even before the police or firemen - to reach the scene of a car crash or gang rub-out. Because of this, and his direct manner of photographing, Weegee became the chronicler of The Big Apple. The exhibition provides a survey of Weegee's world-famous oeuvre and comes from the collection of the Side Photographic Gallery in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England, founded in 1977.

Exchanges: Body is Required

The Museet for Fotokunst in Odense, Denmark, established in 1988, possesses an extensive collection of historic and modern nude photography. The museum regularly assembles exhibitions from this collection. 'Body is Required' includes the work of eighty photographers, including stars such as Eadweard Muybridge, Josef Breitenbach, Lola Alvarez Bravo, Imogen Cunningham and William Klein. In a multifaceted and dazzling manner that speaks to the imagination, 'Body is Required' documents the relation between humans and their bodies. The exhibition was curated by Finn Thrane, director of the Museet for Fotokunst.

Land of Promise

The Noorderlicht photography commissions, which in 2001 and 2002 were awarded to Adriënne van Eekelen, Antoine d'Agata (F), Anders Petersen (Swe) and Ken Schles (USA) will be previewed during the festival. The last two years they photographed the city of Groningen and its residents in their own personal ways. The exhibition follows at the end of 2003 (together with the 2003 commission, being carried out at the moment by the Englishman John Davies), under the title 'Land of Promise'.
