An aeroplane crash, a bathtub full of blood, a cyclone: on the face of it these are alarming photographs of terrible events. Accustomed as we are to seeing images of this sort in the news, we immediately regard the photographs as authentic. In reality, they are about disasters which never took place. The Hungarian photographer Dezso Szabó (b. 1967) stages disasters and crime scenes, in doing so raising the 'truth' of photography for discussion. Szabó's photographs are a part of the national event 'Hungary on the Sea', organised to mark the entry of Hungary into the EU.
