The eighth edition of the Media Art Festival Friesland will be taking place at the same time as Noorderlicht. At three locations, the festival will be exploring the world of current audio-visual art projects. The schedule includes video and film works, varying from experimental, short and long films to video clips, poetic videos, animations, interactive CD-ROM's, internet projects and multi-media installations.
The Festival opens on Saturday, September 18 at 8:15 p.m. in the Theater Romein in Leeuwarden. Ralf Sausmikat, artistic director of the European Media Art Festival in Osnabrück, will present an introduction to media art for this occasion. Thijmen van Grootleest, director of the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, will present the incentive prize to the maker of the winning graduation film, which will then be shown. On the same evening productions by the Portuguese José de Biscaya (audio-visual) and Uvgu_zen (photography/Germany) will be premiered in the Romein.
Installations by graduating students from the Dutch polytechnics for visual arts will receive pride of place in the various exhibition spaces. Productions by international artists will be seen in the Computer Gallery (CD-ROM and internet) and the Video Salons (video and film). In the Experience specialists and artists will be speaking about the work, and dj's and vj's will provide a spectacular image and sound show. The space also offers an opportunity to discuss the work.
