Mariska Beenen is interested in Arab culture. In addition to her training at the Minerva Academy (drawing, painting, photography) she studied Arabic at the University of Groningen. In 2001 she lived for several months in Cairo and traveled through Egypt. Most of the photographs shown here were made during that period. Beenen: 'I have various styles of photographing: documentary, painterly, journalistic, fabulous and disorienting.'
