Yishay Garbasz (b. 1970) was born in Israel, but for a number of years now has lived in America, where he also received his training in photography. 'In My Mother's Footsteps' is a report of his trip to the places that played a role in his mother's eventful childhood and youth.
Garbasz's mother was born in Berlin in 1929. Four years later, in flight from the Nazis, she arrived in The Netherlands with her parents and two sisters. They settled in Groningen, where they moved into a house on the Folkingestraat. In 1942 they were rounded up and transported to camp Westerbork. Thereafter followed a journey into hell, through a series of concentration camps: Theresienstadt, Auschwitz, Christianstadt, Bergen-Belsen. The parents died, the three children survived. When they returned to Groningen in 1945 they found their parent's house occupied by strangers. Through France and Crete they ultimately arrived in Palestine. On the basis of a 'itinerary' they drew up, for over a year Garbasz traveled with his camera to 'all the places where I once lost a piece of my soul', as he put it in a recent interview with the Dagblad van het Noorden. In the Synagogue Garbasz is showing work from this project in progress for the first time.
