Jacoba Wijk Gallery has moved from the city of Groningen to Wehe-Den Hoorn. The new gallery is located in a 19th century miller's house which also offers overnight lodgings. Wijk has therefore joined Heritage Accommodations Nederland, an organization for unique, historic guest houses.
To mark her reopening, Wijk is organizing an exhibition not only in her own gallery, but also in two other heritage accommodations: the Schathoes van de Borg Verhildersum and Oosterhouw, the former home of the poet C.O. Jellema (1936-2003). Both are located in Leens, within bicycling distance of the gallery. At the three locations work is to be seen by three photographers with whom Wijk has worked for many years: Margriet Smulders, Philip Provily and Carla van de Puttelaar.
Margriet Smulders makes baroque, carefully arranged still-lifes from flowers and fish, in which she also often makes use of glass, mirrors and cloth. The work of Philip Provily is characterized by the combination of deceptive simplicity and small riddles. His serene portraits, staged scenes and still-lifes call for closer examination. Carla van de Puttelaar makes detailed photographs of the bodies of nude women in which, in an extremely precise way she is able to balance intimacy and detachment. Idiosyncratic use of light and color gives her work a sculptural character.
