In The Netherlands the town of Staphorst is synonymous with religion, conservatism, and black stockings. Almost every Dutchman is sensitive about this stereotypical image, although only a few have ever actually been to Staphorst. Karine Versluis, herself born in Staphorst, photographed daily life in the notorious town. She saw how different generations deal with the traditions differently. A lot has changed in Staphorst in the last thirty years, Versluis concluded. Religion still plays a large role there, but the town is also moving with the times.
In 2007 Karine Versluis (b. 1980, The Netherlands) graduated from the Royal Academy for the Visual Arts in The Hague, the city where she now lives. In June, 2007, Staphorst appeared in book form.
