THE FUTURE OF PHOTOFESTIVALS

date 15 and 16 September location Zomers

As part of the international program adjoining Act of Faith, Noorderlicht will host an international Curators Meeting that will take place during the opening-weekend of the festival, Friday 14 - Sunday 16 September. The meeting will offer the opportunity to informally meet curators and directors from photo festivals and photographic institutions, as well photographers participating in this year's festival.

During a seminar on Sunday afternoon we would like to discuss the future character of photo festivals against the background of the fundamental changes that have taken place in the realm of the medium over the last decade, notably the development of digital technology and the Internet. Photography has become overwhelmingly abundant. Inevitably this influences the role of photography festivals. Are they a relic from an era of limited possibilities for presentation or an enduring podium for discovery and confrontation? Are they to be art fairs for advanced players or playgrounds for young entrants, crowd pullers or trendsetters?

At the meeting, together with representatives of other international photofestivals and institutions that deal with photography, several guest speakers from the international art and photography world tackle the question of the changing role and position of documentary photography and the consequences this is having for photofestivals.

The Curators Meeting is a closed gathering, intended exclusively for the invited exhibition curators and other professionals working in the field of international photography and photo presentation.
