People of mixed-race are excluded from traditional categories; they are neither white nor black. Clement Cooper (1965) took photographs of them, emphasising their power and identity. With this series he wishes to celebrate the beauty of People of Mixed Race. "I want to give viewers insight into the diverse experiences of people of mixed-race". People who emanate from two completely different cultures have a different view on life, different thoughts and opinions. The most important issue in Deep is the relation between people and their surroundings, and consequently the placement of the individual. On closer inspection, the seemingly coarse relation between the individual and the place where he lives, proves to be the entrance to a silent warmth and value. This series by Cooper consists of powerful portraits which provide an intrigu-ing insight into the experiences and feelings of people of mixed-race. Moreover, emphasis is placed on the importance of recording everyday life, as "I do not create these things. They are here," he says.
