The images in this series by Eric Hamelink (1964) are part of a travel account. It is meant in a literal sense as almost every photo was taken while travelling. More importantly though, it is a figura-tive journey made in the photographer's mind, damaged by a brain tumor a year ago. The title Tropic of Cancer comes from Hamelink's own shower curtain on which a map of the world is depicted. "This sentence catches the eye, while showering, of course not without reason." After this experience events in his life were re-examined and received new meaning. Possibly this explains Hamelink's methods; his works are photographs made from details of previously taken photographs. Through impressive images he shows us how his view on things and people surrounding him was influenced by personal experience. The images that are created in this way, seem coincidental and no longer hold clear reference to time and place. However, within a greater context, they acquire an additional meaning, referring to life that continues as usual despite everything.
