Just as during Noorderlicht 1995, Niggendijker's rooms are at the disposal of Stichting Basalt Amsterdam. This foundation occupies itself with image and archive research concerning photography, the publishing of photographic books and the organization of exhibitions.Four expositions in which a great number of photohraphers are taking are presented at Kunstcentrun Niggendijker.

In a salon-like presentation 80 portraits can be seen. This includes works of photography by Koos Breukel (1962), Ulay (1943) and Rineke Dijkstra (1959). Just three of the photographers showing their work in The Vulnerable Man. where large differences in approach to the subject are to be detected. Intimacy is an important factor to all three photographers. However, in Ulay's work, intimacy is combined with alienation, and in Dijkstra's work it is combined with momentuality. Her work can be seen at the Biennale of Venice this year. Breukel creates intimacy by portraying the striking aspects in a person, challenging the conventional image of a portrait. A book by the name of The Vulnerable Man will be during the 1997 edition of Noorderlicht.

New works by among others Jasper Wiedeman (1963), Niels Schumm (1969) and Prix de Rome-winner Paul Kooiker (1964) will be shown at Kunstcentrum Niggendijker as well. There is a also a presentation of the work of three female photographers: Carla van de Puttelaar (1967), Celine van Balen (1965) and Hellen van Meene (1972). Work by the last named can also be seen at the exhibition Unbeschreiblich Weiblich? at the Der Aa-kerk. More photo work by Ulay can be seen in the monumental entrance of Niggendijker.
