The series of portraits of women by Leo Divendal (1947) pays tribute to the strength and beauty of women. The women portrayed do not necessarily have the characteristics prescribed by the prevailing beauty ideal. The beauty of these strong women is mainly created or accentuated by the melancholic atmosphere of the images. The strong contrast between light and shadow plays an important role. Several portraits in the exhibition appear in the recently published book 'Divendal'.
