The series My Monument is part of a trilogy; the first part is titled My Enemy, the second My Monument and the third My Heart. In this series Bettina Flitner (1961) shows women who talk about their lives. In each of the series one emotion has been focused on: hate, appreciation and love. Flitner used the same technique throughout the series; she went out into the streets and asked women a question, the answer to which she then later combined with a portrait of that same person. In the series My Monument the question was whether the women felt that they deserved a monument and if so, why. The women were asked to chose an appropriate symbol that would enforce their story, and were subsequently portrayed with this symbol. Flitner applauds everyday heroins with these portraits, who are placed on a pedestal, speaking both literally and metaphorically.
