Most photographs in the series Americana were taken in the residential areas of Seattle and show the houses of the residents. When someone buys or rents a house, the house can initially have a very impersonal character. Humans like to show their individuality by changing their house from others in the street. The flowers in the garden, the car on the drive or the fence around the property give an idea of who lives in the house. Firth wonders whether he can identify the residents through the appearance of the house.
