The series shows aspects of life in Europe. Rijven chose the border between Portugal and Spain for part one.

"To a country a border is a great comfort: within its boundaries it cherishes language and customs and guarantees its inhabitants a place: a house that they can dust and clean. When a border is removed, the inhabitant of the border area is the first who has to adjust and assess his roots. From now on he knows that the gates are wide open and he wonders how he will recognise his neighbour or know who his loved ones are, now there are no more foreigners."
