Rio Branco's (1946) photos embody the riches, complexity and sensuality of Latin-America. The tension between morning and night, land and sea, pain and pleasure is powerfully portrayed in his work. The pictures show bull fights, boxers and prostitutes, giving expression to deep human passions. Rio Branco does not attempt to hide the desolate side of life, but instead shows pain, loneliness, violence and death, which he transforms to poetry and beauty with his extraordinary command of the intense colours and lighting of Latin-America. It is a representation of a world that transcends externals and in which beauty finally gets the chance to tame the beast. Rio Branco is part of the photo agency Magnum.
