Gostelow's (1962) work is not made up from single photographs, but from photo collages. The collage enables him to encapsulate a memory. He makes them for himself, for family and friends. The combination of photos reflects a certain happening, for example a birthday, a holiday or a trip. This method is for Gostelow a way of gaining access to his emotions. The deeper layers are like a tangible manifestation of the memory, like a fabric woven from imagination and emotion. During the construction of the work a close connection forms with the person for whom the work is being made as well as with the contents of the collage itself. Gostelow's work is therefore strongly personal and tied to experiences from his own life. |
