Since 1994 the twin brothers, Doug and Mike Starn's (1961), art work has referred to light and the sun. They have examined the symbolism of the sun in various different times and cultures, for humanity has always been at the mercy of it.

From the summer of 1996 onward, the two brothers photographed moths and other insects that were attracted by the light on the veranda of Doug's house. The results are portraits of miniature creatures, with different personalities, living in an uncertain world, parallel to that of humans. Nobody knows why, but moths are attracted by light, it is not for mating, nor food. Like butterflies, moths are as light as air, yet they are the family's poor, stupid scions. Attracted by light they fly to the inevitable end of their life, banging into the ceiling, endlessly flying around a lamp, or flying straight into a flame, their vulnerable, fine spun wings burnt to a cinder.
