The Noorderlicht Photogallery is a versatile and leading platform for photographers who are in search of new visual forms and use the medium to investigate and visualise the world and its societies.
Because of wilful and alert programming and the publication of special photo books Noorderlicht has gained a reputation of an institution that combines socially engaged content with visual beauty. Noorderlicht is internationally oriented and has no permanent photographers.
Since the Summer of 2005 the gallery is founded in a beautifully restored building in the centre of Groningen. It occupies 500 m2 of exhibition space and shows 5 or 6 exhibitions every year.
The Noorderlicht Photogallery was founded in 1980 and has built a long career of permanently showing high-quality photography exhibitions since then. The roots of the gallery lie in documentary photography, a genre that dominated during the first ten years of its existence. In recent years different forms of art photography are also shown, though the emphasis remains on the documentary genre. The Noorderlicht Photogallery is one of the oldest photogalleries in the Netherlands.
Until January 2005 the gallery was housed at the USVA (centre for cultural student activities from the Groningen University).
The archive on this site provides a full overview of the gallery's exhibitions.
