Pandora's Box is the Noorderlicht research archive that holds recent work by photographers of all sorts. All submissions that take our interest are filed in Pandora's Box. Inclusion of projects in the archive may result in exhibitions in the Noorderlicht Photofestival, the Noorderlicht Photogallery or a Noorderlicht project. The archive is also available to outside organisations that come to Noorderlicht for advice on photography.
SUBMITTING - CONDITIONS AND DIRECTIVES
NB: the following applies to all submissions. If the work is submitted for a specific project or theme such as the annual photofestival, please indicate this clearly.
When submitting your work please heed the following:
We are looking for photoseries, either finished or 'in progress'. Noorderlicht rarely shows or works with single images.
The work should be accompanied by a short and clear description of the project plus a c.v. and complete contact details of the photographer/artist.
Before you submit your work please consider carefully whether it might be suitable for Noorderlicht. This website will give you a good idea of the photographic context within which Noorderlicht operates.
We especially welcome recent projects, for instance a series you just finished. We emphasize that you can also submit projects that are still in progress. Older or even historical series are not excluded, but there are fewer opportunities for Noorderlicht to show such work.
The direct sending of a specific series is better than just e-mailing us a website address where the series is to be found.
Images
We only accept material submitted through DVD, CD-ROM, e-mail (large files are not a problem), prints, or publications. When sending prints or publications, please also include scans whenever possible.
Digital files should be provided at high quality and at a resolution of at least 1000x1500 pixels. Images through e-mail preferably in jpeg format.
Always save files in RGB or grayscale mode, not as CMYK. If color management is used, please include the color profiles in the image files.
Digital submissions should be sent as separate image files, preferably not as PDF or Word files. Powerpoint, Director, MPEG files or video DVD's, may only be used when concerning a multimedia presentation that cannot be presented otherwise. Also then send some separate images in addition.
When sending prints: please make sure that the printing quality is good and that the size is at least 20x25 cm (8x10 inch).
Return
In principle submissions will not be returned. Exceptions are single copies such as dummies or special prints, in which case you should clearly state this and the return address.
Deadlines
For the theme of the annual photofestival a deadline always applies and will be published on this website. For submissions that are not linked to a specific project, no fixed deadlines apply.
The deadline for submitting work for the 2008 Noorderlicht Photofestival has passed, however we are still inetersted in seeing your work if you whish to send it in. In this case please try to submit it as soon as possible. For information on the theme click here.
Reply
Please keep in mind that we cannot guarantee a quick reply. We receive hundreds of submissions every year, especially concerning the annual photofestival. They take some time to process. Please rest assured that everything we receive will be carefully looked at and that everyone will receive an answer.
Third-parties
Noorderlicht will never hand out submitted material to third parties without consent. However, Pandora's Box is available to other institutions and exhibition spaces looking for a photographer. It might thus be possible you will be contacted by someone other than Noorderlicht.
Co-operation
We welcome proposals by both photographers and curators and institutions.
Photo books
Besides concrete proposals, we are also interested in a general dialogue. We would for instance love to see the books you published, and feel this to be a valuable means of exchanging information with our colleagues. Especially catalogues of group shows are always very welcome. Our love for books is well known as evidenced by the special products of our own publishing house Aurora Borealis.
