Is faith permissible? Or is faith compulsory? How sacred is the line separating church and state today, long the unquestioned foundation of Western democracy? How firm is the theory of evolution? How conceivable is unbelief?
Belief: indispensable for one, unthinkable for another. Experienced individually but lived out collectively, it binds together communities of faith, and seperates them. In the world called faith, truth very quickly becomes one's exclusive possession.
Call it Catholicism or Islam, call it Hinduism or Scientology, shielded by traditions and closed ranks, these communities offer the faithful a source of certainty, a shining beacon of norms and values. But unavoidably these believers have to deal with an outside world full of unbelievers and those who believe differently - certainly in a fast-changing world which is increasingly characterized by the free movement of goods and services, people and ideas. The believers and the outside world: in the knowledge that saving words are seldom spoken, Act of Faith explores conflicts arising at the points where personal values and social systems impinge on each other.
