In "Natura ex Machina - a collection dramatically displayed" photographer / visual artist Rommert Boonstra has staged a part of the museum collection. The book features these images, alongside diary fragments and poems by Boonstra. The sum is a story in word and image, with the collection as a starting point. Poet C.O. Jellema, who wrote an introduction to the book, expresses the effect of Natura ex Machina as follows:
"Imagery that uses an unexpected reshuffle of dead materials like lifeless birds, amphibians, rocks and minerals, becomes clear when it tells us something about ourselves, when we become in some way bound to the 'material', that we begin to suspect rather than understand, that attention to the existing things can help us come to terms with mortality."
