Broekhuis (Netherlands, 1952), who initially worked as a social-documentary reporter, gradually developed into being a photographer of natural and man-made space. The northern Netherlands are the primary scene of his endeavor. Although adept at both architectural photography and photographing urban spaces, he prefers vast, natural landscapes. That distinguishes him emphatically from contemporary Dutch landscape photography, which focuses primarily on the appearance and results of advancing urbanization.
The varied effects of space and light play a central role in his work. One of his best-known books is 'Een Wijde Blik Verruimt het Denken' (1990), concentrating on the landscape of Groningen. Because of his responsibilities as the director of the photographic center Noorderlicht, for several years now he has worked almost exclusively in the immediate vicinity of his home in Friesland. |
